Director’s Note: Hi! Thanks for considering auditioning for The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Before we get any further, there are three “buckets” of performers to choose from when auditioning.

Bucket A: Principal characters: Frollo, Quasi, Clopin, Esemeralda, and Phoebus. With the exception of Clopin, these actors will not generally be a part of the Ensemble in their off scenes. Auditions MON-TU night. Will be called 1-3x a week.

Bucket B: Ensemble and Gargoyles: Characters like Frederic, Gargoyles, King Louis, etc. AND your general Ensemble track. These actors will move to join the Choir in their off scenes, so they will not leave the stage once the show begins (except at Intermission). Although Clopin is considered a principal, they also fit into this bucket and join the choir. PLEASE NOTE: while the Gargoyles may sing with the choir, they will be visible for the entire duration of the show (except intermission). Auditions MON-TU night. Will be called 1-3x a week.

Bucket C: Choir: These performers do not want to dance and/or may need a lighter summer schedule. They will be called 1x a week for roughly the first 6 weeks. They will not leave the stage once the show begins (except at intermission). The choir will be featured in the Entract of Act II. Auditions SU night. Around week 7, may be called 1-3x per week.

Rehearsals will be:
Full cast (including choir) SUN 6-10PM starting July 5th.
2-3 additional weeknights 7-10PM depending on building and actor availability.
No actor will be called more than 3x per week.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, a dance audition, and singing. Auditioners should wear closed-toe shoes and movement clothing for the dance audition. Vocal auditions will consist of a choir audition and cuts from songs as follows:

Songs for Auditions:

Choir: Auditioners who are auditioning for the choir will not be asked to prepare anything in advance. We will hold auditions for the choir as if it is a choir rehearsal. Auditioners should be familiar with the show.

Click the button above to register online. Upon registering you will receive an email containing a link to sheet music and tracks for songs that you will be asked to perform at the audition.

AUDITIONERS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL PERFORMANCES AND POSSIBLE ADDED PERFORMANCES WITHIN THE DATE RANGE OF THE RUN ALONG WITH TECH WEEK (9/13/2026-9/17/2026) REHEARSALS.

All roles are open. All auditioners must be at least 18 years of age. With exception to those ONLY auditioning for the choir, all auditioners will be asked to participate in a dance audition.

Dom Claude Frollo - Archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral and the most powerful cleric in Paris, he is the reluctant caretaker of Quasimodo. He will do whatever it takes to rid the city of the Roma “vermin,” even as he lusts after Esmeralda. Calculating, manipulative, and obsessive. Director’s notes: Physically assaults Esmeralda and stabs Phoebus; must learn fight choreography. Has a physical flirty moment with Florika. Must be able to shout/yell/portray anger onstage. Possibly dies onstage/partially visible. Actor age 40-50. D4-E2.

Jehan Frollo - Claude’s reckless younger brother. With Florika, he fathers Quasimodo, who he leaves in his brother’s care. Wild, passionate, and strong-willed. Director’s notes: dies onstage. Joins the Ensemble post-death. Actor age 20’s. Eb4-G#2.

Florika - A Romani woman and Quasimodo’s mother. Director’s notes: has a physical flirty moment with Frollo. Joins the Ensemble post-death. Florika’s solo at the end of Act II may be reassigned. Actors of all vocal ranges who would like to be considered for Florika should audition. Actor age 20’s. If wanting to be considered for her solo, F5-C#4.

Father Dupin - A priest of Notre Dame and Claude and Jehan’s guardian. Director’s notes: joins the Ensemble after Scene 1. Actor age 40-60. A4-C4.

Quasimodo - The deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame and Claude Frollo’s charge. Lonely and staunchly obedient to Frollo, he possesses a vivid imagination that brings to life the bells and gargoyles of the cathedral. Despite his shyness and uncertainty, he quickly befriends Esmeralda. Big-hearted, and brave when need be. Proud of his strength. Director’s notes: gets kissed on the cheek. May be asked to carry Esmeralda. Gets whipped onstage. Gets lifted to sit on shoulders. Must be able to shout/yell/portray anger onstage. Actor age 20’s. Bb4-Bb2.

Clopin - The clever and charismatic King/Queen of the Roma. An air of mystery surrounds Clopin, who often leaves the scene in a playful trick. As the master of ceremonies for the Feast of Fools, they are witty and playful, but they boast a darker, serious nature when not performing for the crowd. Director’s note: joins the Ensemble when not onstage as Clopin. All auditioners who would like to be considered for Clopin regardless of gender should audition. Actor age 30s. G4-C3.

Captain Phoebus de Martin - Returning to Paris after serving in the war, Phoebus takes up his new position as Captain of the Cathedral Guard. Overconfident yet charming, this handsome, strong soldier makes the ladies swoon, yet his moral compass is also strong, and he openly defies the corrupted Frollo. Director’s notes: kisses Esmeralda. Flirts with various Ensemble members. Has a short altercation with Esmeralda, gets stabbed, and is involved in other fight choreography. Actor age 30s. Ab4-Ab2.

Esmeralda - A beautiful and free-spirited Romani woman who possesses the strong sense of justice and morality that Frollo lacks. Compassionate, she frees Quasimodo from the frenzied mob at the Feast of Fools and, against her better judgment, falls for the cocky Phoebus. Director’s notes: is physically assaulted by Frollo and has a short altercation with Phoebus; must learn fight choreography. Must be able to yell/shout. Dies onstage. Kisses Quasi on the cheek. Kisses Phoebus. Actor age 20s. Db5-Eb3.

Gargoyles - Director’s notes: Six statues that help guide Quasimodo throughout his life. In our version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame the gargoyles will live onstage the entire show and are separate from the Ensemble. Ideal candidates are strong actors and singers who can hold their own harmonies. The gargoyles will be responsible for a lot of scene shifts into the bell tower. This role requires a physical demand for holding poses. Comedic timing appreciated. Actor age any.

ENSEMBLE INCLUDING:

Lieutenant Frederic Charlus - Lieutenant of the Cathedral Guard and loyal friend to Phoebus. Director’s notes: is involved in various fight choreography. Actor age any.

Madam - Owner of a brothel and safe haven for the Roma. Director’s notes: Non-singing feature in one scene. Actor age any.

King Louis XI - King of France, nicknamed the Prudent. Is in the Ensemble when not portraying King Louis. Director’s notes: Non-singing feature in one scene. Actor age 40s.

Saint Aphrodisius - A stained-glass image that comes to life. Director’s notes: Is in the Ensemble when not portraying Saint Aphrodisius. Singing feature in one scene. Actor age 30-50. E4-B2.

Congregation - Roma, soldiers, and citizens of Paris. Director’s notes: Your traditional ensemble track. Various (not all) congregation members will be asked to learn fight choreography. Tricks and gymnastics welcome (especially in Topsy Turvy). Actor age any.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame delivers a sweeping, emotionally rich musical inspired by Victor Hugo’s classic novel and the beloved Disney film. With powerful choral music, soaring melodies, and a story that explores love, justice, and what it means to be truly human, this production follows Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and the people of Paris as their lives collide beneath the shadow of Notre Dame. It’s a moving, visually striking theatrical experience that resonates long after the final note.
