Almost all actors play two parts: the "actor" and the actor's "character" in the play-within-the-play. British accents are requested but not required. If you feel comfortable using a British accent please be prepared to use your accent at the auditions. Listed ages are just a guideline.
Dotty Otley / Mrs. Clackett (Female presenting; 50-70)
Dotty is a once "much loved" actress who is now in the waning years of her career, and is having trouble remembering her lines and stage direction. She has used her life savings to help finance the play to help with her eventual retirement. She is playing Mrs. Clackett, who is the housekeeper in the Brents' home with a penchant for putting her feet up while snacking on some sardines.
Lloyd Dallas (Male presenting; 30-50)
Lloyd is the director of the play, Nothing On. He is self-absorbed, temperamental, and has an eye for the ladies.
Garry Lejeune / Roger Tramplemain (Male presenting; 20-40)
Garry is an actor who is easily fired up and always has a lot to say but never finishes a sentence. He is playing Roger Tramplemain, who is an English real estate agent who is attempting to rent out the Brents' home, but often uses it for his own personal "entertainment."
Brooke Ashton / Vicki (Female presenting; 20-35)
Brooke is a young and popular - but inexperienced - actress known for playing the sexy ingenue. She learns her part by rote and will say the lines as written no matter what is going on around her. She is NOT stupid, vain, or a Diva. Rather she spends a lot of time thinking her own thoughts and doesn't always connect with the world or the people around her. She is playing Vicki, who is a young office worker for Inland Revenue (the English IRS) who Roger hopes will be his lunchtime "entertainment." Director's Note: Brooke / Vicki spends the majority of the show in her undergarments. Auditioners interested in this role must be comfortable performing in little more than their undergarments. The costume is not set yet and we hope to collaborate with whomever we cast to find something that fits the script while ensuring the performer feels comfortable and safe wearing it.
Frederick Fellowes / Philip Brent (Male presenting; 30-50)
Frederick is a character actor with a serious fear of violence who gets nosebleeds at the slightest sight of blood. He is self-deprecating when things go wrong and often questions the meaning of his lines and blocking. He is playing Philip Brent, who is a successful playwright who lives outside the country with his wife Flavia to avoid paying taxes. He is constantly worried about being caught by Inland Revenue (the English IRS).
Belinda Blair / Flavia Brent (Female presenting; 30-50)
Belinda is the self-assigned mother of the group. Cheerful and sensible, she dislikes conflict and likes to help make things run smoothly. She plays Flavia Brent, who is dependable and forward thinking, though not one for household duties.
Poppy Norton-Taylor (Female presenting; 20-35)
Poppy is the assistant stage manager of Nothing On. She is emotional and over-sensitive and doesn't have a lot of experience as a stage manager.
Selsdon Mowbray / Burglar (Male presenting; 60+)
Selsdon is a long time stage actor who is best known for his short-lived but popular TV series on the BBC. He is an actor of the old school with the greasepaint in his veins and a bottle of scotch always at the ready. Slightly befuddled, never entirely sober, and very hard of hearing, Selsdon is an old friend of Dotty who is giving him another shot with his role in Nothing On. He plays the Burglar, who is an old roustabout who longs for the good old days when stealing things meant something.
Timothy Allgood (Male or Female presenting; 20-30)
Tim is the stage manager of Nothing On and a jack of all trades. They have a fatal flaw: they can't say no. If you want the set rebuilt overnight, need your taxes done, need an understudy for all your actors at a moment's notice, or just want them to go without sleep for the night then Tim is there for you without question. They might be passed out on the floor, but they'll be there.
